New Beginnings

I can't believe it's been over 6 months since my last post! A lot has happened in that time, which will explain my absence from writing this blog.

First of all we bought a house here in the Highlands so we are not longer renting. We eventually settled on a 1/2 acre property about 5 minutes from Bowral - the main hub of the Highlands. We also had a baby 10 weeks ago, so things have been hectic to say the least!

Our house needs work but is very livable and since moving in last November we have (almost) finished painting the entire inside of the house, replaced all the carpet in the bedrooms, pulled out half the garden and started furnishing and decorating. It'll be a slow process as we do plan to do some renovations in the future but for now it's all about cosmetic and decorative touches.

Our next priority is to paint the external bricks, windows and doors, which should start in the next couple of weeks. We're doing most of the work ourselves to a) save money, and b) because my husband and I want to learn some new skills and are both very 'pro-active' people. My motto is "You can do anything. You just have to be shown how."

So, we're currently deciding on external paint colours for the brick and woodwork. We did consider rendering the brickwork, except we both felt it would make the house too contemporary. We love weatherboard / timber cladding but doing this would mean we have to replace all the window and door surrounds as the windows are inset into the brickwork. Plus, I'm really into painted brick right now. I think it creates a real cottage feel and can give a unique sense of character to a home.

Below are some of the images I'm using as inspiration. We're really leaning towards either white brickwork with white windows and charcoal shutters, or a light beige/white with white or faded grey woodwork. I especially love the colours in the first image below. Anyway time will tell!

I'll be sure to post the Before and After photos once we've finished! Nicki x

Ready, Set, Go

Sorry for the radio silence! Have had a lot going on lately as I've been in the early stages of pregnancy and was subsequently struck down with horrible all day "morning sickness' for almost 2 months straight, so apologies for big gap since my last post.

So, anyway, it was while I was sick that I watched a couple of movies and realised the depth of my obsession with the movies and set design of writer/director Nancy Meyers - think Father of the Bride, What Women Want, Baby Boom. Although it's her more recent movies which have been a hit worldwide for the homes and interiors as much as for the storyline and acting; Somethings Gotta Give, The Holiday and It's Complicated.

Given we live in the country, I am drawn to country interiors more so than modern/city design, so the set design and interiors from the film It's Complicated really speak to me. I just love this house but also love the characters in the film - 'Jane' (played by Meryl Streep), 'Jake' (played by Alec Baldwin) and 'Adam' (played by Steve Martin). I have seen this film at least 20-30 times and each time I watch it, I pick up something new from the set design that I haven't seen before - a fabulous lamp, a coffee table, a part of the garden etc. If you haven't watched it, you really should! Here are some shots of the house from the movie (and from her two other famous films). I'd love to build a house like this one day.

'Jane' (played by Meryl Streep) in front of her sprawling Santa Barbara ranch from the movie It's Complicated.

'Jane's' simple country kitchen. I'd be happy with this, although in the film, Jane plans a kitchen upgrade.

The stylish sitting area in 'Jane's' Santa Barbara ranch. Love the touches of bold orange and blue.
A combination I wouldn't have thought of doing, but works so well against a neutral pallet.
The AH-MAY-ZING vegetable garden - I literally dream of having a vege garden like this!

'Jane' and her architect 'Adam' in the front courtyard going over her new house plans.
I absolutely love the spanish-influenced ranch style home, including those spanish roof tiles.

Another view of the front courtyard - love the simple steel windows and rustic country elements.

'Jane's' bedroom - subdued and elegant, combining an eclectic mix of french and spanish styles, lots of texture and layering, with just a small burst of colour.

Nancy Meyers other films, The Holiday and Somethings Gotta Give are my other favourites houses. See below!

The chic and modern living area from the movie The Holiday. Love the monochromatic scheme.

The kitchen from The Holiday. This is such a stunningly cool kitchen.
The bedroom from the movie Somethings Gotta Give. I don't know a person who doesn't love this house.
The kitchen from Somethings Gotta Give. One of the most copied and/or desired kitchen styles around!

Cotton and Wood

I have a thing for wood. And cotton, and linen and stone!! Basically, I am in love (in the interiors sense) with natural materials. I love the way textured natural materials create a real sense of warmth, earthiness and an air of unpretentiousness.

Natural materials just speak for themselves and more often that not, don't need to be anything other than what they are. That is their beauty. From simple painted wood panelling and external timber cladding, to hardwood timber flooring, linen sofas, wicker chairs, and timber french windows and doors. Simple. Elegant. Natural.

Given I'm currently working on two luxury waterfront wood homes, it's meant I've been able to focus almost entirely on researching wood homes from all over the world. I've borrowed a stunning hard cover book called Building with Wood, Unique Living with Mi Casa and it is possibly one of the most beautiful architecture and interiors books I've ever seen. I personally think the homes in this book are stunningly unique; an elegant blend of the traditional and modern, as well as stylish, sophisticated and unpretentious. This is my absolute favourite style of architecture and interiors, so take a look at some of Mi Casa's magnificent work below. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do!

iStyle

I'm quite amazed at the amount of uber-stylish accessories out there right now for your iPhone, laptop and iPad. I have especially fallen in love with an iPhone 4S cover by Swedish fashion & textile designer Lena Holtzberg from Studio Rita, which features a gorgeous feather design in soft muted greens, beige and white. These are so my colours right now and I just love the simple, elegant print.

I am also in desperate need of a laptop case / bag (given my macbook is starting to get scratched and horribly finger-marked) and I note that Kate Spade has a host of fabulously stylish laptop bags at the moment. I personally don't want my laptop bag to look like a laptop bag, which is why it's taken me a while to find one I really love that's stylish enough and doesn't look clunky either.

Anyway, I think my search may be over....check out these gorgeous gadget accessories to bring style back into the everyday!

iPhone covers by Studio Rita in Sweden made especially for Lab.C in Korea. I love all these designs - fun and gorgeous.

My favourite iPhone cover right now!

I'm also loving these ultra cool designer accessories! Is it my birthday yet??....
